This unit discusses different strategies, techniques, and methodologies to use in the classroom while teaching EFL. There are many method types, but the one focused on most in this unit is ESA, which stands for Engage>Study>Activate. While there are several different structures within ESA, every ESA style lesson will have sections that include time where all students use a little English to get ENGAGED in the lesson, a time for focused instruction on new content, where the teacher will elicits information from the students and ensure that students practice and STUDY the new concept correctly, and a section where free and uninterrupted communication time is given, allowing student to recall what they have known as well as what they just learned. In this ACTIVATE stage, correcting errors is less of a focus, and simply communicating and accomplishing a task is most important. Overall, it is important to remember to be positive and supportive, and challenging students to correct themselves and each other instead of just giving them all the answers. The only way students will really learn and retain language is through practice and mistake making. Helping students feel relaxed and willing to make mistakes is the job of a good teacher.
