This unit briefly introduced the various primary methodologies and techniques that have been used in TEFL, as well as giving a picture of which of these have been more popular in the past and which seem to be used more ubiquitously today. In particular, the majority of the unit went into greater detail introducing and describing the 'ESA' (Engage, Study, and Activate) method pioneered by Jeremy Harmer. I found the outlining of the ESA method to be very useful in that, as the unit described, I could appreciate how this method is appropriate for trainee and new teachers. As a fairly new assistant language teacher myself, I found the description of the methodology and the examples given easy to follow, and both recognized how this methodology has been already utilized by my teachers and I in the classroom in my time thus far teaching English, and could also imagine utilizing the techniques more thoroughly and focusing on the ESA framework more when designing lesson plans and activities in future. In this way, this unit served as both a more formal introduction into different TEFL teaching methods, as well as an opportunity to reflect on how I and my teachers have been teaching English and analyze how we may improve our teaching based especially on the ESA framework.
