In this unit, concepts of basic grammar are presented, including nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and prepositions. General rules for how each of these operate within the structure of the sentence in the English language is given, as well as exceptions to these rules. One of the concepts highlighted is the four main types of verb tenses, which include basic form, past simple, past participle, and present participle. However, most verbs are irregular and have different forms instead of the rule for how to notate tense. Overall, it is important as an English teacher to be familiar with the general rules of the English language so that you can accurately help student learn and navigate the exceptions. Obviously, we do not have to have all of these terms and rules memorized, but should be able to refer back to texts for guidance and explain them to appropriate depths to meet each student at his or her level of study.
