This unit outlines the basic components of a lesson plan and suggestions for how to write them effectively. A lesson plan should be a clear, concise guide that the teacher can refer to during the lesson. It should include measurable learner objectives, teacher objectives, and then procedures for the lesson and what phase (of ESA) each procedure/activity falls in. Including estimated timing for each activity is crucial too, because it allows the teacher to manage time wisely. A lesson is a working document. After every teach, teachers should make note of modifications that had to be made for future reference, as well as filling out a reflection on the overall success of the lesson. Did students meet the objective? If so, why? If not, why not? How can I improve as a teacher? A lesson plan IS NOT a rigid, scripted document for the entire lesson. A teacher MUST be flexible and fit the lesson to the needs of the students. But without the plan, teachers will not be well prepared and will be setting themselves up to have a lesson that fails.
