Classroom management is a very important skill when teaching. A teacher, in fact, has to organise and manage the class and establish a relationship with the students. He/She has to know when to be firm but also when to be flexible. Also, a teacher has to mantain discipline and try to prevent problem behaviour deriving from different reasons.
Eye contact, gesture and voice are essential to set a good relation with the students.
According to the classsize and classroom furniture, a good way to organize the class is grouping students,
from whole-class grouping to pairwork to groupworks.
Even the position of the students and the teacher's one are extremely important: orderly rows, circles and horseshoes and separate tables are some possible classroom arrangement solutions.
This unit also gives an overview of the pros and cons of the teacher talking time and how to reduce it to promote the student talking time. It also helps to understand how important is giving individual
attention to the students and giving instructions by using simple language and being consistent.
This unit made me to reflect on the fact that a good classroom management largely depends on the atmosphere set in the classroom by the students; however,
the general attitude and the approach of the teacher have a key role in the class.
