Unit 11 introduces the four basic skills in any language: receptive skills (reading and listening) and productive skills (writing and speaking). In particular, it deals with teaching receptive skills. Depending on the situation, the reasons for reading and listening are different: reading and listening on purpose is different from doing that for entertainment. Students do not read and listen only with their eyes and ears, but with their minds too. For example, pre-teaching vocabulary and carefully selecting texts could be solutions to deal with learners' difficulties. Even the choice of topics is crucial to keep them engaged and motivated: the teacher should always create interest by discussing the topic, showing pictures and predicting the text is about. Comprehension tasks are also important to promote understanding. At the end of the unit, there is a useful example of a patchwork lesson that shows how receptive skills should be taught.
