This chapter is about pronunciation and phonology. Phonology is the study of intonation, rhythm, and stress. Intonation is the variation in volume and pitch through an entire sentence. The three patterns of intonation in English are rise/fall, fall/rise, and flat. Stress is when emphasis is placed within an individual word. Pronunciation is how a word sounds. This is achieved through complex interaction within the mouth, throat, and lungs. The phonemic alphabet allows you to understand the correct pronunciation of a word regardless of the correct spelling.
