This unit covers strategies and concepts of classroom management. It is important that I know how to keep students engaged in learning at all times. Besides lesson planning, the other key component to student engagement is in fact classroom management. Factors such as student grouping, physical space arrangement, and working with students in a respectful way to establish rapport are all important to establishing a healthy learning environment with good classroom management. It is important that teachers try to increase STT (student talk time) and decreas TTT (teacher talk time) as much as possible. This will not only help with how much they apply and absorb the content of the lesson, but it will naturally help decrease behavior issues because students who have tasks that require them to be using language with their peers are less likely to be off-task or a distraction to anyone else. It is important that instructions are given clearly, concisely, and with simple language so that activities can be understood and accomplished by students and so transitions from stage to stage within the lesson run smoothly. Monitoring during all learning activities is crucial to ensure students are actually learning content correctly as well as minimizing any potential for misbehavior. In the instances where misbehavior occurs, it must be dealt with quickly, consistently, and in a way that is fair to all students. As a teacher, it is also important to know what type of discipline policy the school has in place and to work inside that policy.
