This unit dealt with the pros and cons of using a textbook in the classroom. It is important that students get a variety of instruction techniques that are interesting and appropriate for their language level and learning needs. No one textbook is perfect. So these books are best used in the classroom when they are used as one of several resources in each lesson. Teachers should supplement some parts of the lesson with authentic or created material in order to fill in anything lacking or uninteresting in the book lesson. Also, teachers must not allow "following the textbook" to become an excuse for not planning well. Textbook lessons can make teachers lazy and students uninterested IF teachers are not still proactive and creative in their planning.
