This unit was all about concepts and techniques for teaching receptive skills-that is, reading and listening. Both of these skills are equally important to the students' mastery of the language. When teaching reading and listening, it is important to provide a variety of topics, because keeping students interested and engaged is key to gaining these skills. So a great teacher will know about the interests of students and will do everything they can to provide topics/themes in lessons that keep all students interested. Also, it is important to provide activities that are both Authentic and Non-Authentic (theoretical) examples. Authentic audio and texts will allow students to practice decoding skills and search for what they already know, building a confidence in what they CAN do. However, too much of this and students may become overwhelmed. Non-authentic examples are structured for the learners, providing text and audio that allows them to gain confidence in new grammar structures and vocabulary that has been presented in a very direct, theoretical way. Of course, teachers must always be sure that reading and listening activities are not just for checking understanding, but stretching and challenging students too. Too easy and students won't actually grow in mastery. Too hard and students will become discouraged and give up. The goal is for all receptive activities to provide an achievable challenge to the students in the class.
