There has been continual debate as to which methods and techniques produce the best results in terms of learning and teaching English. Unit 3 provides a summary of the various EFL methodologies and approaches. It also gives an overview on how to deal with corrections techniques and giving feedback.
As the students need to be motivated, be exposed to the language and have the chance to use it, an effective and interesting approach to use in classroom is the Engage, Study and Activate (ESA) one. Thanks to this approach, the teacher will try to arouse the students' interest through different activities and materials. After this "warm-up", the students will focus on the language and its construction through different practices (the most common one is the elicitation used by the teacher). Finally, the students will be encouraged to use all of the language they know, in a free and communicative way. There are different techniques of the ESA lesson: it is up to the students' English level and the topic. Ideas for the Engage, Study and Activate phases are also provided in this unit.
Apart from learning the several methods, approaches and techniques about EFL teaching, thanks to this unit I learnt that, deciding which methodology is the best to use with the students will depend on individual circumstances (teacher's personality, culture of the students and their needs).
