Unit one presents the concepts of what makes a good teacher, what makes a good student, and how students and teachers interact in the classroom. This unit lays out the qualities of good teachers, which include being kind and friendly, motivating, entertaining, and strong in content knowledge (among others). Also, roles of teachers are discussed, including how teachers will need to transition from "High-control" roles (such as manager) to lower control roles (such as participant or facilitator) in any given lesson. With regards to students, the qualities of a good student include an interest in the language, a willingness to experiment (and make mistakes), and a teachable/humble attitude (among others). The qualities can and should be present in learners of all ages and at all levels of English competency. It is important as the teacher to understand how a learners age, background, and current English level are affecting them in the classroom. English levels vary from Beginner to Advanced. How these levels are defined varies based on different school cultures and/or different curriculum being used, so it is important to know how the specific school context defines these levels and delineates learners based on ability. Bottom line is that the BEST teachers care about their students and how they are progressing as much (if not more) than how and what they teach. The betterment of the student is the priority of a great teacher.
