This unit lays out all four forms of past tense verbs and how they are used. Past simple is the subject+verb followed by a 'd' or 'ed' depending on the verb. However, this is only for regular verbs. Many verbs do not follow these rules for past tense at all. Past continuous uses at verb with ing after 'was/were' instead of is. Past perfect is had + past participle of the verb. And the past perfect continuous form of the verb is had been+verb with 'ing'. These verb forms all have different types of usages depending on the time frame being referenced and whether the action is continuing to happen in the past or not. Distinguishing between which one should be used is difficult, especially for the foreign language learner. So it is important to clearly explain the differences in these tenses and the rules for their structure so students can learn to accurately apply the past tense forms and speak them correctly.
