This unit describes different teaching methods and techniques that can be used during a lesson. It briefly describes common techniques used along the years for teaching and learning a new language. Such techniques include grammar-translation - which looks for similarities and differences between the students L1 and the new language, task-based learning - which focuses mainly on the completion of tasks given to students, communication language teaching - which allows students to use the language as much as possible, etc.
It goes further to introduce the Engage, Study and Activate method which encompasses all the techniques of other teaching methodologies. The Engage phase of the ESA method arouses students' interests and gets them involved in the lesson through fun games, music, stories, etc. The purpose is to get every student to talk and think in English as much as possible before moving to the next phase. The Study phase focuses on the language itself; elicitation, punctuation, spelling, etc. Here the teacher has more talk time. At the Activate stage, students are encouraged to use all the language they already know and what they just learnt through activities such as role play, surveys, debate, etc.
Concerning feedback, the teacher should avoid correcting students during the engage and activate stages. Errors during these two stages should be noted and corrections made during the study phase.
