Rhame, North Dakota TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
In this unit I learned about the needs of special groups of English learners. This includes beginners, young learners, adults, business classes, multilingual classes or even one-on-one classes. Each of these groups will have special considerations when it comes to building a lesson plan and picking activities. I will most likely be teaching young students with little to no prior English experience. It was interesting to me that it was not recommended to speak to students in their native language even at the beginner level. This makes sense when we think about the way the brain absorbs language, however, it is contrary to the way language learning was presented to me as a young student. It wasn't until I had been studying Spanish for years that teacher transitioned to using Spanish rather than English as the primary instructing language. I wonder how this would work with very young children, possibly 5 years of age. If I walked into a classroom and started speaking at them in a language they didn't understand, how would they respond? I doubt I would get a high degree of attention from them. I think it would be helpful in this case to begin with introductions and maybe an ice breaker in the native language and explain to the students that I will be speaking primarily in English.
