In this unit I read about the different types of ways of assessing students. As a teacher in the classroom I will probably administer placement tests at the beginning of a course, progress and diagnostic tests throughout the course as well as practice tests for external examinations if applicable. Testing students can show a teacher where the class' ability level is, which topics and lessons need more work as well as the specific needs for each student. Although it can be stressful, it is a vital part of the learning process. I think it is important to let students know that testing is not competitive, and the goal is not to get a specific grade. Rather it is a way for the teacher to adapt future lessons to the students' skills. Striking a balance of the four skills, speaking, listening, reading and writing is also important to assess students. One of the best ways to do this is have a one on one conversation with the student, asking them questions and prompting them with increasingly difficult topics to gauge their level of fluency. However, this may be difficult with a very large class.
