Max, North Dakota TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
In this unit, I have learned a great deal about both teachers and learners. When it comes to teachers, especially good ones, we need to have many different roles and characteristics. For example, we have to be an assessor, but be fair and considerate. We need to be a manager, as well as a participant. The role of the teacher depends on the activity and what we want the students to learn, but we need to be proficient in all the roles in order for our students to become good learners.
As well as learning about the roles and characteristics of teachers, this unit taught me the differences between adult and young learners as well as the different levels of language ability. In adult learners, they will tend to be more nervous, but have more life experience that will add more variation to lessons. In young learners, behavioral problems may occur, but they will have fewer barriers when learning due to less language awareness of their own native tongue. Learning the different language levels also taught me how to assess a students level depending on their skill.
Overall, I learned a great deal from Unit 1. The biggest lesson I learned, however, is that being a good teacher helps students become good students. The way a classroom is run by the teacher greatly affects the success and motivation of the students.
