Hope, North Dakota TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
In this unit I reviewed the four past tenses: past simple, past continuous, past perfect, and past perfect continuous. Remembering the usage for each was one of the most difficult parts of this unit for me. While I could easily identify which tense was being used, or pick out errors and correct them, I had a hard time justifying my own use of a particular tense. Again, I think as a native English speaker I so rarely have to analyze my choice of tenses. However, now that I am reviewing grammar lessons I haven't seen since grade school I catch myself making mistakes in my everyday language. Oftentimes, the way I speak with my friends and family is not 100% grammatically correct. That was the most interesting discovery for me while reading through the material. It made me realize how important it will be as a teacher to use the correct grammar in front of my students. Sometimes it can be fun to for students to learn slang and hear someone talk like a "native". However, it is more important that students have a firm base before they start to explore the cultural significance of variations on the English language.
