From this unit, I have grown to understand the importance of the intricate relationship between the students and the teacher. There are a series of qualities both teachers and students should possess in order for successful language learning to take place. However, it is the responsibility of the teacher to foster and harness these qualities in their students. For example, if the teacher has an adult learner who is lacking confidence, it is important to work on building them up through patience and and not correcting the student every time they contribute to the lesson, giving them the confidence to use and experiment with the language. Understanding the types of personalities in the class is key to knowing how to bring the best out of the students. In addition, it is important for the teacher to truly understand the task they have set and to understand their role within it. It is vital that the teacher understands when to take a step back and allow learning to occur naturally amongst their students through the activity they have organised, and when it is necessary to step in and explain or take a more active role in the activity itself. The ability to adapt their role in the classroom and encourage qualities such as, confidence to ask questions and acceptance of mistakes, in their students is what makes for a successful teacher.
