This unit covered pronunciation and phonology. I learnt that it is a difficult area to teach, but very important for students. Phonology was discussed in depth, including intonation, stress, sound joining and linked speech. From this unit I learnt how to indicate intonation, and what message the intonation carries. A basic set of rules for where to place stress was given. The techniques used to teach stress and intonation was listed. Sound joining and linked speech was discussed, and how it is the natural way for English speakers to sound. The phonemic alphabet was given, and it was discussed how it can help students understand English better. Articulation was covered, including place and manner, and how the two interact. The techniques for teaching this pronunciation were listed. Helpful sources were mentioned, including Elements of pronunciation. From this unit I learnt more about the phonemic alphabet, and to be realistic with pronunciation and accept intelligibility.
