This unit explores the different approaches, methods and techniques of teaching.
Some of them have been used for centuries and today are still applied. Others , instead, are out of fashion as the Audio – lingualism developed during the second World War.
All methodologies present positive and negative sides .For example, the grammar translation, despite being still the most popular method, is more focused on writing and reading than listening and speaking in constrast with the Audio – lingualism whose priority is the opposite.
The unit offers a general view of the ESA method which this course is based around
The ESA is based in 3 stages
Engage
Study
Activate
The Esa method can be applied following different structures :
The Straight Arrow
The Boomerang pattern
The Patchwork pattern
All these patterns have to start with an Engage phase and finish with an Activate stage.
The lessons can alternate multiple stage but has to follow this basic rule
The unit analizes the correction tecniques , stating a difference between mistakes and errors.
The writing correction is based on codes that correspond to different issues such as : word order, spelling and tenses.
Correction can be self correction by the student, correction by other students and as last resort , the teacher correction.
