Grafton, North Dakota TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
In this unit I learned about the productive skills of speaking and writing. One of the hardest parts of learning a new language, in my opinion, is having the confidence to speak and make mistakes. While the reading from this unit offered many helpful techniques like drilling exercises to build confidence and pair work to reduce "stage fright", building a rapport with your students is also very important. As a student, I needed to be encouraged to speak. Good teachers would work with me on my mistakes, correcting me in a way that didn't make me feel like I had "messed up" but rather that there was a more correct way to say something.
Getting students engaged and interested to speak also requires a great deal of involvement by the teacher as well. A teacher has to get to know their students and find out what interests them. This must be fairly difficult in a large class of highly diverse students. At the beginning of a course it might be a good idea for the teacher to do a "get to know you" activity with their students.
