In this unit I learned about the methods for learning language. I found myself remembering activities I had to do in Spanish classes in school and categorizing them into the different methodologies. While at higher levels we did more task-based learning, I realized that much of my early education was simply a grammar-translation style. This has led to complications when I try to put my Spanish into practice. Instead of picking up words and phrases in the context of the language I tend to craft a sentence first in English and then translate it word by word to Spanish. The Engage, Study, Activate method struck me as a really effective way to learn language. I think the Engage phase is really important because especially with older, post-pubescent students, getting them excited about learning can be the hardest part.
