We use Past Simple for a past action when the time is given, when the times is asked about, when the action clearly took place at a definite time. Past Continous is used for interrupted past actions. Past Perfect is used to express an action which happened before other actions in the past. Past Perfect Continous is used to talk about longer actions or situations in the past that has been going on continously up to the past moment.
