This unit seems like a good sort of over-arching view of how to teach new language to language students, but thankfully adds some practical things that can be done to help in this endeavor. For instance, while a textbook or curriculum might dictate for the most part what language a unit should be covering, the teacher still has some say in what they will teach, and certainly a lot of say in how they will teach it. That said, when introducing new vocabulary, the teacher should consider how often students will come across that language and how often they will be called upon to use it, how appropriate the language is to the students, their culture, and their task at hand, how easily teachable the language is, and whether or not the language is at the right level for the students current language ability. There are a huge number of activities that can be done in Engage, Study, and Activate for teaching new vocabulary. Some of the things that influence how easily students learn new vocabulary are closeness to their native language, closeness to the English they already know, how appropriate and useful the language is, and how the word is spelled and said. Things students need to know about new vocabulary is pronunciation, spelling, use, meaning, grammar, and interactions with other words and grammar structures. New vocabulary is very easy to teach with a straight-arrow ESA approach. New grammar structures can be taught with any approach, but a patchwork or boomerang lesson will work well in most cases. Students need to know the meaning, the form and patterns, the use, and the pronunciation and spelling of new grammatical structures. For teaching new language functions, a patchwork or boomerang lesson approach will often work the best. Students need to have a pretty good background already (which means that maybe they have already been taught a certain amount of vocabulary and structures) that can support them learning a new function. Teaching a new language function is really an activity in activating their language fluency, which means a straight-arrow approach may be too limited for these topics.
