Center, North Dakota TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
In this unit I viewed two videos. The first video showed a teacher who had clearly not planned his lesson very well in advance, was impatient, hurried and nervous. The students immediately responded to his body language and tone of voice. He was quick to reprimand and humiliate students over small mistakes so students were not willing to participate. In the second lesson, the teacher began by establishing respect by learning the names of each student. He was encouraging and mistakes were not viewed in the frame of mind that the student was "wrong", simply that they weren't "there yet". In the second lesson the teacher was clear with his instructions and would check in with individuals on their understanding.
Watching the first video I was reminded of times I was a student in a classroom where I didn't feel respected. Often, if the teacher seemed nervous and impatient I also became nervous and frustrated with myself for not understanding. One of the hardest things about learning a new language is when you don't understand the instructions for an activity. In the second video the teacher made sure his students could form a grammatically correct sentence for the worksheet and understood how the game worked. He didn't resort to using the student's native language but instead spoke slowly and checked each individual for understanding.
