In this unit teaching of productive skills was discussed. Speaking and writing are both equally important, but writing is sometimes neglected in a TEFL class. For a productive skills lesson, it is vitally important for the students to have a need and desire to be able to communicate. Accuracy is usually covered in the study phase, and fluency in the activate phase. The types of speaking activities, namely controlled, guided, and creative communication were listed and discussed. The reasons some students might not want to speak were given, and techniques to encourage students' participation was given. The guidelines for an effective lesson was discussed, for before, during, and after the lesson. From this unit I learnt to evaluate during an activity, and provide positive feedback after. The reasons for good handwriting, spelling, layout and punctuation were mentioned, and sample lesson plans for both writing and speaking were given. This unit gave me many ideas for games to play to improve students' English, while having a fun lesson.
