Burlington, North Dakota TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
As a native English speaker this was probably the most awkward unit for me to conceptualize. I remember vaguely learning the phonetic alphabet, or perhaps a version of it, in school when I was a young child. However, like anything that is not practiced regularly, I forgot most of it. Reading through this unit I was reminded how important stress and intonation are when speaking English fluently. It made me think of the way I speak Spanish, how flat and monotone I must sound. I wonder if all languages carry as much meaning in the way things are said as in English.
I do appreciate how important learning pronunciation is to simple skills like reading a menu or asking directions based on a map. Because I was taught how to pronounce the ll and rr when I travel in a Spanish speaking country I can be understood, even if I am not speaking fluently. When in France however, I could not even communicate to a native where I was trying to go without pointing to a map because I had never been taught how to pronounce the French sounds.
