The teacher's tone, and gestures are important for many factors in classroom management, including holding the students' attention, maintaining discipline, and conveying meaning in instructions.
Overall seating arrangements also have a significant effect on talking time of both the teacher and the students. A large classroom with desks lined up in rows works well for lecturing on the part of the teacher, but reduces student talk time. Smaller groups in the form of a circle or a semi-circle may be chosen by the teacher for ease of pair-work and increasing student talking time. It also makes the learning experience more intimate and the teacher's position is less dominant.
