I learned that the most typical use of the past continuous tense is to talk about something that was happening around a particular time in the past.
For example; What were you doing at 9 o’clock last night? I was watching a movie. (I started watching the movie before 9 o’clock and I continued watching it after 9 o’clock.)
While past perfect tense is used to emphasize that an action was completed before another took place.
For example; When she arrived we had already started cooking.
The past simple is used to talk about actions or situations in the past.
For example; I visited Rome last week.
And for past continuous, this tense is used to describe an ongoing action that started in the past and continued for some time in the past.
For example; He had been watching the movie for two hours.
