This unit covered conditional sentences and reported speech vs direct speech. I have always had trouble explaining the intricacies of conditional speech with the past tense representing present and future hypothetical situations. It was my first time to encounter the language of “zero, first, second, third and mixed conditionals”, but the separations seem very intuitive as a primary English speaker. I think it might still be a struggle to explain them to a secondary language learner, especially if there is a cultural gap in how they think about and speak in conditional language. However, I think this unit had some good suggestions on how to start teaching the ideas. Likewise, I had never thought about the changes that are made when people are reporting speech. The chart in the lesson will be incredibly useful in teaching this grammar. Also, I’ve noticed that the way that people report speech often depends on their local vernacular and doesn’t always end up following these grammatical rules. I think for advanced learners we could even discuss slang and alternate phrasing in this area.
