At first, this unit made total sense. As a native speaker of any language I think we tend to not think of things like stress and intonation. As I was working through sentences and trying to notice the different rise and falls and where I put the stress on words, it became a little easier to understand how I could teach that to a class.
In the Japanese class that I am assisting, I often notice in our practice many students lack the ability to change their intonation. For an activate activity the students are asked to memorise a script of a typical daily conversation that includes vocabulary and grammar from the unite they are studying. They then perform this in groups the next class period. Many students up using a flat voice because they don't understand how to stress different words in the foreign language, so I tried to use that activity as my own model on thinking of how to best teach this unit to students learning English.
However, the second part of the lesson I feel was extremely difficult to understand on my own. Phonetic scripts at this point seem to be way beyond my ability, and I'd feel uncertain using that in the classroom at all with students. But, I do believe it is something I should look into more to have a deeper understanding of how we use the mouth to form our language.
