Unit 19 covers the topic of teaching special groups. Teaching special group involves teaching different types of classes. These classes include: beginners, individual students, children, business English, English for specific purposes (ESP), monolingual classes, and multilingual classes.
The section that intrigued me the most was the teaching of beginners. Teaching beginners involves having to deal with many different levels of students. An absolute beginner knows no English at all. A false beginner has been exposed to English but has not retained anything. An adult beginner tends to be highly motivated. A young beginner lacks motivation but is able to pick up language faster than an adult. Finally, a beginner with no Roman alphabet knowledge will require the most work in basic literacy, reading, and writing. Understanding the differences will make teaching each type of beginner much more effective.
