Weldon, North Carolina TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
A very successful teaching method is ESA or Engage, Study, Activate. Jeremy Harmer compiled this method after studying and accessing many of the methods that have been used in the past, such as the classical method (or grammar-translation), audio-lingualism, and task-based training.
In the Engage stage, students warm up by thinking and talking in English with very little teacher talk-time. The teacher strives to get everyone to say something in this stage.
The Study stage covers the actual lesson topic or the teaching point targeting specific language. The teacher does boardwork here, elicits responses from students, and continues on to worksheets. Here the teacher assesses student understanding, as well.
The Activate stage puts the teaching material into realistic contexts. Activities could include students surveying each other, also called Mill Drills, students debating, and role-playing.
These stages can be done in Straight Arrow fashion (E>S>A), or Boomerang fashion (E>A>S>A) or Patchwork fashion which is the most varied use of ESA. It is very necessary for each lesson to begin with Engage and finish with Activate regardless of which fashion a teacher wants to conduct a lesson.
