Grammar provides the building blocks for language. Unit 2 gives us the parts of speech. Each part serves a particular purpose in the sentence. Nouns, one of the two parts of speech that make up the core of a sentence, name something (place, person, thing, quality, state or animal). The second part of speech that makes up the core of a sentence is the verb which describes the action or state of being of the subject (which is a noun or its substitute, the pronoun). The other parts of speech each serve to give more information about the subject and what the subject is doing. This includes describing a noun with an adjective or describing a verb with an adverb or describing an adjective with an adverb. The conjunction joins sentences or groups of words into one sentence. The preposition shows us the relationship of words in the sentence. Our articles point out whether the noun it precedes is a member of a group or is a distinct, separate entity. Gerunds take verbs and change them into nouns. Thus, by knowing the parts of speech and their functions, we can create sentences that clearly express our intended thoughts and ideas.
