This unit gives an overview of conditional sentences and reported speech, both of which can be rather confusing to learners because they affect the tense of a sentence in many different ways. In conditionals, the tense of the sentences affects the "reality" of the conditional, as well as the time. In reported speech, the reporter must consider when a statement was made, by and to whom it was made, and whether the action/state reported still holds true. It is also difficult, because many English speakers don't abide by some of these rules in speech. For example, some people might change "I went to the store." to "He said he went to the store," instead of "He said he'd gone to the store." As the unit states, this is an area to take slow with students, as there are many components that could be easily confused.
