I was initially surprised, though honestly I shouldn't have been, at the similarities between organizing a lesson plan and creating an adventure session for a tabletop role-playing game. When you write out a script, your characters feel robotic-so a few notes on personality and motivations more than suffices. If you are too rigid, your players don't feel like their choices matter. Like a lesson plan with specific learning goals, your story has an objective that you want to advance, but you want to give your players the most freedom possible in reaching that goal. In either case, it is about maximizing engagement of either the student or the player; using visual aids or a whiteboard to illustrate important details. Keeping a record of your lesson plans and following it up with a self-assessment allows you to constantly improve, gauge the progress of your students and provides a reference for future classes.
