This unit deals with the qualities of a good teacher, the roles they are likely to perform, the types of students they will be dealing with (very young learners through to adults), the ways in which these students may be different from one another in their learning approach and attitude, the positive aspects of a good learner, noting the importance of cultural background, different levels of ability and possible reasons for students to want to study English. I feel that the depth of instruction here, particularly in the roles that a teacher performs and the qualities that should be expected from a good teacher, is very good. It has both reinforced my existing idea of how I should conduct myself when teaching as well as giving me new things to bear in mind and improve upon, particularly with regard to ensuring participation of ALL students in a class. The outlined roles, namely those of an assessor, organiser and monitor, are something that I will often reflect upon when teaching my classes to make sure I am both helping students to enjoy their experience whilst paying close attention to how successful my activities and instruction are, which students may require help and the best kind of help to provide to them.
