Teaching receptive skills -reading and listening- this section highlights the processes a person undertakes in reading and listening. Processes such as predictive interpretation can be taught. I often teach this by reading an article line by line, stopping after each line and asking “What is going on here? What do you think will happen next? , Make up the rest of the story.” I sometime call this advance thinking, meaning thinking in advance of what is known, predicting the future. When I start this the students are all lost and do not have any idea what to say. But soon they learn to pick up clues and important defining words and then they can predict the story with great accuracy. Then they begin to use this in everyday living experiences and begin to predict their own actions and foresee a chain of events. They think “If I do this, then in three weeks this will happen.” This changes the way they view the world.
