Ruth, North Carolina TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
While reading through Unit 3 I was able to to relate most of the content to the methods used when I was studying a second language in university. Before considering becoming a teacher, I had never thought about how much practice and study go into developing lessons that are most useful to the learners. While studying the ESA approach, I realized that, in fact, this method is the most common one used by my professors. Often the lesson starts with an engaging activity where the students often review the vocabulary and grammar from the previous class. Then they go into a study of new information. Then there is an activity that helps combine the two at the end. It's been a concern of my on how I could best engage my class to keep them focused and interested, and studying this method definitely helped me get a better idea on how to accomplish that. I also realized how important it is to pick activities while keeping the class level in mind. During my beginner courses often we did role-plays and memorized dialogues, but as I entered more advanced classes, we translated texts and had topic discussions. I thought for the first time how discouraged I probably would have felt if I was expected to do translations and deep discussions in my beginner courses.
