Unit 20 covers the topic of troubleshooting common problem situations. These can include: the first lesson, in which teachers build rapport with students; learn more about each student, assess student needs; and evaluate individual English levels for each student, which can be used when planning future lessons. The use of warmers is very important, as it allows instructors to help inspire and motivate students at the start of a lesson.
Having different levels of English ability within a classroom can be difficult at times, but instructors can pair stronger students with weaker ones to help allow students to help each other. Large classes can be hard to manage at times, but use of pair work, group work, worksheets, and appointing group leaders can help things stay under control.
There are students who will try to use their native language during class. This is usually not done to be disruptive, but can often times be a result of students being unable to express themselves effectively in English. This can happen when a student is trying to help clarify or explain a point to another student. Try to encourage students to use English while in class, but do not be tyrannical and ban use of their native language altogether. Ignore the urge to respond to questions made in their native language, this should coax students to instead try to form their questions in English.
