This unit gives an overview of the two receptive skills, reading and listening, as well as the necessary components to teaching these skills. Teaching reading and listening effectively involves finding a balance between pre-teaching language necessary for understanding and allowing students to learn unknown language on their own, selecting both non-authentic and authentic materials that will engage students, and having students perform tasks that aid comprehension rather than check comprehension and that provide a challenge that is realistically achievable. One of my major takeaways from this unit is that a balance between skills, topics, and tasks needs to be met in order to engage all students' interests and language skills over a period of time.
