There are five conditionals in the English language, comprising an 'if' clause, and it result. Some are factual and will always remain true, such as the zero conditional, and some are unlikely, or even impossible, such as the third conditional. The structure of the tense in the condition and the result are the best way to differentiate the different conditionals. As a native speaker, reported speech simply feels natural, but knowing the guidelines around how the speech is changed when reporting a direct quote is interesting to learn. Expressions of tense, subject, and time expression must be changed when reporting speech, and these are known as 'switching back', or 'backshifting'.
