When I was a study abroad student, I first became aware how important exams where for students learning English. As a native English speaker, I have many opportunities to go abroad, even if I have no experience in the language of that country. For learners of English it's very different. Even to be able to study abroad, these students have to a specific score on their TOEFL exams.
Therefore, as an English teacher, I think it's very important to understand the motivations of the students. I had no idea there were so many different English exams that a student could choose to take, so knowing what motivates my students is important. Are they leaning more towards business? Do they just want to know tourist English? Are they hoping to live long term in England? Depending on their answer, there are many different areas of focus that I should be determined to teach them.
I think that's where being a teacher in a school can become difficult. On one hand, the students need to learn the curriculum that you have been assigned to teach to pass the specific types of exams you instructed to conduct. But, on the other hand, it's important to have the interests of the students at heart too. If they feel they are just regurgitating materials instead of learning about their interests or motivations, then they might lose focus for the class, and maybe English all together.
