TEACHING PRODUCTIVE SKILLS They are speaking and writing • Accuracy activities (study phase) are concentrated on producing correct language Fluency activities (activate phase) are concentrated on effectiveness and flow of conversation Speaking activities • Controlled activities – Accuracy; controlled by the teacher Drilling (try to use “3 by 3” drill: whole group 3 times, then 3 individuals) Prompting (pre-planned question and answer) Study phase • Guided activities – Accuracy based, but more creative and productive Output is controlled by the teacher, the exact language – isn’t Examples: model dialogues, guided role play Study/activate phase • Creative communication – Fluency based activities The scenario is created by the teacher, content – isn’t Examples: free role play, discussions, information gap, debates, simulations, communication games Activate phase Reasons why student can seem unwilling to speak • Lack of confidence • Fear of making mistakes • Peer intimidation • Lack of interest in the topic • Previous learning experience • Cultural reasons The aim of teaches is to create comfortable atmosphere, where students are not afraid to speak. Techniques to encourage interaction: • Pair work • Group work • Plenty of controlled and guided practice before fluency activities • Make speaking activities purposeful • Change the classroom dynamics • Careful planning • In some activities give students time to think Writing skills • Hand writing is personal issue. But if it is poor – teacher should encourage student to improve it • Spelling is important to avoid misunderstanding • Layout and punctuation • Creative writing – typical task may include poetry, stories, plays Types of games: • Competitive – players or teams race to be the first • Co-operative – players or teams work together towards a common goal
