Unit 9 discusses lesson planning. This unit covers why writing a lesson plan is important, explains some lesson planning basics, and provides an example of the ESA methodology being applied to a lesson plan.
The main reason we should write a lesson plan is to help keep a record of what will be covered in each lesson. This will come in handy if you need to look back to see where students were with their lessons a year ago. In addition, it can help serve as a reference document to help keep you on track — especially for new teachers. As a bonus, it is a great resource for substitute teachers.
Lesson planning basics are quite easy to understand. To start off, make sure it is not rigid or inflexible, as student needs come before any structured lesson. Design it to be varied, so as to develop different student skills. Most importantly, keep it simple and easy to understand. Be sure not to write every word that will be said, only what is to be covered. Think of it as a bullet-point presentation.
