Tenses are a very challenging area for any student to grasp. I have learned that these can be broken in small units to help students not become overwhelmed. Whenever this is being taught each area should be given special attention past simple, past continuous, past perfect and past perfect continuous. Allowing students to master these with various activities can help them to practice and use them correctly before moving on to the next tense. The use of pictures are very helpful. Students are able to formulate sentences based on what they see, then allowing them to generate their own picture and sentences can also be helpful. Whenever students are able to use tenses correctly their language will continue to improve.
