Grandfather, North Carolina TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This unit really opened my eyes to content that in my daily speech I would never think about. The section on articles made me realize a huge flaw in information I would normally teach. One way native English speakers remember how to use indefinite articles like "a" and "an" is that if the word following the article starts with a vowel, we should use "an". I never thought of the irregularities that I would face while teaching this part of speech. That if my student took what I would have originally said, then for example they might write, "an university". This would be incorrect grammatically, but based on my words, I would have probably left them more confused on the subject. Now I know that I should teach it by telling my students to be aware of how the following noun sounds. If the noun SOUNDS like it begins with a vowel, then they should use the article "an". This unit showed me that there are many things in my native language I've never truly payed attention to, especially when it comes to irregularities. When it comes to studying the parts of speech, I definitely won't be done learning and teaching myself just because this unit is over. In order to ensure that my students can master this knowledge, I too must feel like a master in it as well.
