Past tenses are formed much the same way as present tenses. Therefore, learning the past tenses is a natural next step for students studying English verb structure. In both present and past tenses, the continuous form uses a form of "to be," and the perfect form uses a form of "to have."
The past perfect and past perfect continuous are not used as much as the past simple and past continuous. Students at lower levels will be introduced to these language points, but will not work with them as much as more advanced students.
Students will benefit from comparing the forms in chart form or stacked with one tense per line. Also, activities which include time indicators will help students better understand the usage of each of the four tenses.
It is important that students know that they can identify the tense of a particular verb or verb phrase by its structure. For example, the past simple never uses an auxiliary verb.
