Fountain, North Carolina TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
I had never before heard of speaking being broken into two parts. I had always assumed speaking to be one general category of language learning, but it actually makes a lot of sense to have things broken down into to the two parts, accuracy and fluency. At first it was a little difficult for me to understand because when I hear the word "fluent" I think of someone who can produce language with perfect grammar and pronunciation. However, I can see that in this case it is being comfortable with the language and being able to produce and experiment with one's own sentences and ideas.
When I was a student, I was afraid to speak up in class with a new language out of fear for making mistakes. So I think it's very important to create a warm welcoming atmosphere to make every student feel comfortable, even if they do make errors. I think this is where it's important to practice how to correct a student. I've been in classes where teachers can make a student feel dumb for mispronunciation or wrong use of grammar... This only leads the student to lose interest and motivation in learning.
I think that pair and group work are such an important encouraging technique when it comes to speaking and writing to help students be comfortable and not in the spot light when it comes to the activate phase.
Productive skills is also a great area to allow students to be creative and experiment with language. I think it's very critical, as the unit suggests, to find engaging and interesting topics that all the students can have fun with. And also mix things up as well to create a variety of interests!
